Mission Statement: We are an organization dedicated to the engagement of effective empowerment for Transgender/Gender Variant people, as well as members of the GLB community. The Trans-Solidarity Project brings scholars and advocates together to engage in research, education and policy initiatives designed to advance the solidarity and equality of the GLBT community within the larger society. To that end, we strive to remove barriers that might inhibit these goals and promote the education of all people and governing bodies.
Donna B. Riley,LCSW - Executive Director
Founding Long Island Trans Experience (LITE) in 1999 presented a special opportunity for me.It was an opportunity to help build a support system and to do real community organizing and education at a grass roots level. At that point much of the transgender community was in hiding, including myself. In the first few meetings, I quickly discovered that many others shared my vision and the Long Island Transgender community began to emerge. We, the LITE group, became a strong, visible, and vibrant community. We shared our successes and supported each other in our struggles.I truly appreciated getting to know my fellow community members and the friendships and bonds that we have formed.
My dedication, passion and commitment to organize and build a healthy transgender community for Long Island is stronger than ever.Together we have made great progress and I plan to continue my work with the same passion and commitment that I am known for. In the end all that I resigned from is the name LITE.
I am reminded of a quote from Shakespeare, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet." Pride Always, Donna
